Basketball season is officially off and running. Both the Men's and Women's teams are away in their tough, non-conference schedules. This weekend the Women's team is at the point of Santa Cruz, Calif. to take on Redlands and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. While these are both non-conference match-ups, they could be pivotal for later on in the season.
Coach Helen Higgs acknowledged the importance of winning in-region games. These two games will reflect directly on the Bucs tournament credentials. Should they pick up the wins, it makes them more appealing as a selection in the NCAA tournament. This is especially true should they need an at-large berth to the tournament.
The Men's team travels down to one of the elite tournaments in the nation. Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. hosts their annual Lopata Classic tournament, with the Pirates being invited to participate this season. On Friday Dec. 4, they will play Pomona-Pitzer and will face Washington University on Saturday, Dec. 5. Washington U. is a back-to-back national championship team and is ranked as the pre-season number one team in all of Division III basketball. The Bucs must be at their best to secure both victories and return to Spokane for the home opener next Friday.
