Swimmer Brad Hoine competes in the backstroke and I.M. He said he has been swimming competitively for 13 years and non-competitively for three years.

The men's and women's swim teams share a coach and practices, but compete separately. All the coaches are male, he said.

"The majority of my friends on the team are girls. I know it's been hard for some of them. The coaches don't understand all the time," Hoine said. "It's a little different not to have a female coach present other than a volunteer."

Everyone is expected to do the same work, Hoine said. Some of the women are faster than he is, he said.
