Human Resource Services is currently reviewing applications for a new assistant vice president for intercultural relations position.

Michael Le Roy, vice president for Academic Affairs, said the university is preparing to have the assistant vice president start on July 1. However, Human Resources will be flexible in order to get the right person for the job, he said.

The job responsibilities will be similar to those of the former special assistant to the president for diversity.

“It is a new position and a new title but it’s not a new role,” Le Roy said.

Gordon Watanabe, who retired in spring 2007, last filled the old position, Le Roy said.

"We had some recommendations from students, faculty and from Gordon Watanabe about the position and we wanted the time to take these into consideration," Le Roy said.

The full-time exempt position will advise the president's cabinet on diversity matters, lead the faculty on diversity matters in the classroom and curriculum and teach part time on the faculty, Le Roy said.

“It’s an expression of a commitment we’ve had for a long time and part of our strategic vision to further our intercultural relations goals,” Le Roy said.

The assistant vice president will provide "oversight and coordination for Whitworth's Act Six; serves as a liaison for the Act Six program and as a liaison for intercultural student affairs," according to the position description.

He or she will also coordinate the academic steering committees for the U.S. cultural studies and women and gender studies minors.
