Three weeks into Whitworth’s spring semester and students are already longing for Spring Break. Professors, don’t take it too hard on yourself when half your class is missing and the other half is staring wistfully out the windows. It isn’t your fault. It’s this occasionally beautiful weather we have been experiencing.
It’s too soon to be pumped for break plans and yet too far away from the start of semester to be excited about seeing your friends since the last holiday. But don’t lose faith just yet, there’s hope on the horizon! We get a three-day weekend!
Due to Faculty Development Day, students are free to roam the streets of Spokane on Friday, Feb. 26. Although, it is my bet that most of them will be just waking up about noon. The question, then, is what are you going to do with your free time? You can’t just waste it on homework. It’s almost spring, so it’s time to be creative.
The first thing that comes to mind is a mini road trip. One to Vancouver, Canada, perhaps? I hear things are happening there these days. In all seriousness, how awesome would it be to make the less than 300-mile drive up north with your friends and hang out around the Olympic park for a day? It’s a beautiful city on any normal weekend, but the place must be buzzing with exciting activities that students can do.
Even though tickets to see any sporting event are going to be hellaciously expensive, you can still buy some memorabilia and make some great memories. Plus, on the off chance that you run into an Olympian, you can use it as a reason for why you didn’t manage to write that Core 250 reading response. I think it’d be worth it; just don’t forget your passport.
Another idea I suggest would be to partake whole-heartedly in Faculty Development Day. I honestly have no idea what the schedule for the faculty holds on this day, but I propose that students dress up as their favorite professor and try and see if they can either sit in on the meetings or on any special meals. It would be quite amusing to see 20 different Dr. Keith Beebe’s walking around campus in saddle shoes and sweater vests. this made me lawl... -Jerod Jarvis 2/24/10 3:15 PM
This would only last for a couple of hours, however, so another fun-filled event Whitworth students could partake in is a Spokane scavenger hunt. Get together with your friends and create a list of completely random places that you haven’t yet seen in your time at school, and go take a picture there. In the year and a half I’ve spent in Spokane, I feel like I haven’t explored much past Division Street. Here is the perfect opportunity to get to know the city most of us spend four, or more, years living in.
If you are stuck on finding good places to adventure to, try looking on the Official Web site of the Spokane Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau. Not only do they list calendar events going on around the city, but also they have a Spokane City Drive tour that lists a multitude of historic sites for people to visit. As an added bonus, I was able to find out that on average, there are 260 sunny days in Spokane. What does this mean? That if Saturday is sunny you better be out there enjoying it because there will only be 259 more!
While out and about on said scavenger hunt, I think it would be rather entertaining to make it a goal to participate in The Pacific Northwest Inlander’s “I SAW YOU, Cheers or Jeers” section. This means go people watching, people! Find someone who catches your eye in a good or bad way and submit it to The Inlander. Plus you will have your camera, or handy camera phone, at the ready so you can document any particularly captivating encounters.
To finish out what will so far be an extremely fun-filled day, my last suggestion is to take the weekend to return to your childhood and participate in some kid-friendly fun. Find a bucket of chalk and decorate the sidewalks outside of your dorm. Or some window chalk and decorate the doors of your dorm. Just remember to get permission first.
If you're feeling really adventurous you can travel down the hill to Pattison’s Skating Rink and try our the limbo on roller-skates, although I’m willing to bet a ten-year-old will beat you. Even more fun could be had at a place like Fastkart Indoor Speedway where you can practice your Division cruising skills miniature style. You can challenge your roommate to a race or two with the loser having to take the trash out for next month.
Whatever the plan is, just make sure to enjoy the day off. Taking the full three days to relish in glorious free time will help you get through the weeks until Spring Break, three of them to be exact. But really, who’s counting?
