There are currently 55 international students at Whitworth this semester, up from 32 last spring, said Harry Daniels-Schatz, assistant director of international admissions.

Daniels-Schatz said after Sept. 11, 2001, the international student population at Whitwoth declined because it was harder to obtain a Visa.

He said the Department of Homeland Security's restrictions on obtaining Visas have been relaxed.

Senior Kristina Kielbon said she has noticed the increase in the number of international students over the past two years.

"It makes me really excited," she said, adding that she enjoys sharing stories and ideas with international students.

Daniels-Schatz said in addition to the relaxed Visa restrictions, the increase in the number of international students could also be attributed in part to representatives from the International Admissions Office attending more international college fairs.

"Whitworth wants to grow the international student population to 100," Daniels-Schatz said.

He said the university encourages comaraderie between international and American students.

The Global Hearth theme house invites both international and American students to a meeting every Wednesday night.

Sophomore Emmanuel Anukun-Dabson is from Ghana. He said attending Whitworth has been a good experience for him so far.

"I like to see myself in a community of students and share common human traits," he said.

Anukun-Dabson said people will often invite him to their houses or for barbecues.

He said there are a few more people in Ghana whom he went to high school or church with that want to follow him to Whitworth.
