Whitworth pounds Southwestern 90-64 in first round
Pirates advance to play Pomona-Pitzer Friday
Garett Myers, Staff WriterThe Whitworth men's basketball team traveled to Southern California Thursday, Nov. 29 to play in the 60th edition of the Lee Fulmer Classic Tournament, hosted by the University of Redlands.
Their first opponent, Southwestern College (AZ), was no match for the Pirates, as they crushed the Eagles 90-64.
Freshman guard David Riley poured in 23 points for the Pirates on 9-for-15 shooting from the field, and senior forward Colin Willemsen had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while adding six assists. Freshman guard Drew Bruns added 14 for Whitworth, including 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point land. It was Riley’s second consecutive game of 23 points or more since he broke the Whitworth 3-point record last week against CalTech, when he scored 29 points.
Whitworth was hot out of the gates, leading 14-7 after just five minutes of play. However, the Eagles managed to pull within four points at 31-27 with seven minutes remaining in the first half after Southwestern sophomore Damien Gossard made a lay-up. Whitworth responded, going on a 14-8 run, which including eight of Willemsen’s 11 points, making the score 45-34 at halftime.
In the second half the Eagles managed to cut the lead down to seven at 52-45 with 16 minutes remaining, but after that it was all Whitworth. The Pirates went on a 23-10 run over the next ten minutes to pull away with a 75-55 lead with just five minutes remaining. Over those five minutes Whitworth continued to pour it on, outscoring Southwestern 15-9.
Whitworth out rebounded the Eagles 47-22, which allowed them to take 18 more shots while shooting 50 percent from the field. The Pirates will play Pomona-Pitzer College tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in the semifinals of the tournament.
