A day after crushing Southwestern College (Ariz.), the Whitworth men's basketball team was at it again, blowing out Pomona-Pitzer Colleges 73-45. Whitworth was led by 21 points from senior forward Ryan Symes, while freshman guard David Riley added 15 for the Pirates.

Following the first nine minutes of the first half, the Pirates were grasping onto just a three point lead after Pomona-Pitzer sophomore Justin Sexton hit a jumper to make the score 13-10. After that, however, the Pirates took over, going on a 17-8 run to end the half. The run was capped by a 3-pointer from freshman Drew Bruns, making the score 30-18 at halftime.

The closest the Sagehens could get was 38-28 with four minutes gone in the second half. From there on out, the Pirates put a nail in the Sagehens coffin, going on a 21-5 run and virtually putting any thoughts of a Pomona-Pitzer comeback out of reach.

With Whitworth leading 59-33, the Pirates eased off the accelerator slightly and coasted to a 73-45 victory. The Pirates were able to force the Sagehens to just 33.3% shooting and 13.3% shooting from 3-point land. For the second night in a row, Whitworth shot well from the field at 48.1%, including 50% from behind the arc.

The victory put the Pirates in the finals of the 60th Annual Lee Fulmer Classic Tournament tomorrow night at 8 p.m. Whitworth will take on host University of Redlands for the title.
