Men's swimming holds on for ninth
Colin Zalewski, Staff WriterThe Whitworth men's swimming team put in all they had at the Husky Invitational Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, but the competition proved to be too tough the Pirates.
The Husky Invitational in Federal Way, Wash. is a who's who of college swimming, with nearly all the competing schools being NCAA Division I participants. The field included huge schools such as the University of Notre Dame, University of Southern California and host University of Washington.
Simply being invited to the event says a lot for the state of Whitworth men's swimming, but the elite level of their peers proved stiff for the Pirates.
Friday's action reflected the high level of competition, but the Pirates bowed down by no means.
Senior Luke Stocker finished 29th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 0:56.59.
Also finishing in 29th place in a different event was freshman Michael Woodward with a time of 1:00.25 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Saturday brought more success and more participation from the team, as they had more swimmers competing than Friday.
Although the Pirates pulled up the back end of the 200-yard breaststroke, their five swimmers outnumbered all other schools except the University of Hawaii, who also had five swimmers competing.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay Whitworth put up their best result of the day, finishing 13th out of the 21 teams swimming. They touched the wall with a time of 3:14.27.
