Internships prove crucial to real life experience
Felicity Brigham, Staff WriterInternships can be a great way for students to get experience in their career fields; it can also help to affirm the choice they have made for a career.
Senior Sarah Morgenthaler is an intern at the Carlyle Care Center, a residence for people with mental illness. Volunteering at the center last spring led Morganthaler to her current internship. It is important for students to go with an internship that works with their schedule and what they want to do, Morganthaler said.
“Figure out a place where you could be happy doing 120 hours of work,” she said.
Before selecting an internship, volunteer or job shadow there to get an idea of the environment, Morganthaler said. Find a place where the interns do more than just get coffee and make copies.
As an intern at KXLY, senior Tracey Brown researches stories, assists producers, and goes out with reporters for live tapings. From this experience she finds internships to be a learning experience. Show a strong desire to learn when interviewing for internships, Brown said. Internships are a great way to gain confidence in a career field, she said.
“It’s so important to go in [to a job] with real life experience,” Brown said.
Career Services can be a helpful resource in finding and making the most out of an internship. The Career Services Web site has a listing of internships available, internship assistant Margot Edmision said.
Information on getting credit towards a major is also available in the Career Services office. Faculty advisers, professors, and Director of Internships, Sandy Nowak are other good resources to use throughout the internship process, Edmision said.
“Find an internship site that’s happy to have you,” Morganthaler said, “and make it your own.”
