Director of student activities Dayna Coleman-Jones said the Student Life Committee recommended a clause in the Student Handbook regarding off-campus behavior be revised.

ASWU members recommended the committee adopt the revised policy.

The revision will take effect immediately, but the new handbook will not be published until the summer, Coleman-Jones said.

Coleman-Jones said many students were upset with the current policy.

The committee recommended to drop the phrase “and behavior that is potentially harmful to the reputation, educational mission or interests of the university.”

Coleman-Jones said the university can become liable for actions students commit off-campus.

The clause in the handbook is a way to show students the university still cares about them even though they have moved off-campus, Coleman-Jones said.

Warren representative resigns

Sophomore Sarah Moore, a Warren representative, announced her resignation.

Moore said she will be returning home due to medical reasons.

“I’m sad I’m leaving,” Moore said at the meeting. “I have really enjoyed [ASWU].”

Junior Katie Zerkel, Executive Vice President of ASWU, said she will be appointing a replacement for Moore to serve until the end of the semester.

According to Article VIII, section 3 of ASWU Bylaws, when a senator or representative seat becomes vacant, "an interim senator or representative shall be appointed by the executive vice-president until an election can be held."

Zerkel said sophomore Rebecca Miller will be the new interim representative.

According to the Bylaws, "an election must be held within one month of the date of the vacancy, (except in times incongruent with the regular academic year)."

Since the semester ends in a month, a new representative will be elected in February, as many of the students will not be present during Janu term,  Zerkel said.

Administrator addresses student issues

Vice president for academic affairs Michael Le Roy addressed questions in regards to several issues raised by students in a recent constituency report.

Le Roy said there has been a recent decline in the number of students majoring in a science field.

A major contributing factor for this decline is the lack of an up-to-date science facility, Le Roy said.

The high cost of the new building will not detract from the annual budget, Le Roy said.

Le Roy said the university is not choosing a new building over new professors.

The university is working to keep the ratio between professors and students at its current number, Le Roy said.

The current student-to-faculty ratio is about 13 to 1, according to an article in the Sept. 18 issue of The Whitworthian.

The addition of the lecturer position and the intensive hiring process help to maintain Whitworth’s academic standards, Le Roy said.

The university is working on ways to retain current faculty, especially minority faculty, Le Roy said.

Le Roy said he hopes the demographics of Whitworth will eventually resemble those of the Northwest.

Club Updates

Senior Karla Rose, president of the Black Student Union, said the group currently has around 25 members.

The club will host the annual Gospel Explosion in February and hopes to plan another event for the holidays, Rose said.

Junior Tyler Thralls, president of Global Servants for Christ, said the group meets in the chapel Thursday mornings to pray for people around the globe.

Thralls said the group contacts different missionaries to learn about their mission work overseas.

The club is planning to host a mission week and possibly a short-term mission, Thralls said.
