Gospel choir sings at BSU dinner
Sophie Sestero, Staff WriterThe Soul Food dinner was the second concert for this year’s Exceptional Praise Gospel Choir.
Freshman Laura Schaffer is a part of the gospel choir directed by junior Matthew Hawkins.
“The first thing [Hawkins] does is prayer and devotion, then we sing a song. He’s very Christ-oriented and lets us know it’s about God, not only the music,” Schaffer said.
"Hawkins’ teaching method is very casual and helps ease the singers’ stress and make it easier to learn songs" Schaffer said. This strategy allows them to relax and have fun with the music.
Schaffer and some of the other singers were anxious about the concert, remembering the notes and performing for an audience in general, she said. There was the added worry when they arrived to find that only 10 singers were there instead of the usual 30, Schaffer said.
“I think we sang pretty well considering we only had 10, and very powerfully,” Schaffer said. “Just being a part of [the gospel choir] is fun! It is fun music. It is fun to change from classical music to something you would sing to on the radio.”
The choir meets at 9:35 p.m. on Wednesdays in the Seeley G. Mudd Chapel. The gospel choir is encouraging new singers to join meetings, as they need more members.
