Student named Miss Idaho USA
Christina Chea, Staff WriterJunior Tracey Brown, who was Miss Idaho 2005 for the Miss Idaho Scholarship Program, was recently crowned Miss Idaho USA 2008.
"It's an exciting time and I am anxious to see what opportunities will open up from this experience," Brown said.
Brown was crowned Miss Idaho USA 2008 on Oct. 13 at Albertson College in Caldwell, Idaho.
"It was nerve-wracking when they had narrowed the field down to myself and one other girl," Brown said. "I was so thrilled when they called my name."
The two-night competition for Miss Idaho USA included a judge's interview, swimsuit competition, evening gown and on-stage question, Brown said.
Brown will represent Idaho at the Miss USA 2008 competition. According to the Miss USA Web Site, the Miss USA competition is generally held in February or March. The location and specific date for the Miss USA competition has not yet been announced.
The winner of the Miss USA competition moves on to represent her country in the Miss Universe competition.
"It has been a challenge trying to explain to everyone the difference between the two Miss Idaho titles, but everyone has been very supportive," Brown said.
The Miss Idaho Scholarship Program correlates with the Miss America pageant, according to the Miss Idaho Scholarship Program Web Site.
"Tracey was Miss Idaho with our program back in 2005," said Brenda Tanabe, executive director of the Miss Idaho Scholarship Program. "She is currently Miss Idaho USA, which is a totally different program."
Debbie G. Brown, Tracey's mother, has supported Tracey since she began competing in pageants.
"When Tracey was a junior at Post Falls High School, she decided to participate in the Junior Miss program," Debbie Brown said. "All of her friends did the program as well and they enjoyed practicing for the program."
Tracey was Idaho's Junior Miss in 2004, Debbie Brown said.
After winning Miss Idaho, Tracey lived with the state director for the Miss Idaho Scholarship Program for a year to prepare for Miss America, Debbie Brown said.
"While at Miss America, she won the Quality of Life Award and scholarship money, which has helped her tuition at Whitworth," Debbie Brown said.
Currently, Tracey Brown is an intern at KXLY channel four and is planning to graduate in the spring with a degree in journalism and a minor in political science, she said.
"My goal for Miss USA is to just represent Idaho, my faith and myself in the best possible way," Brown said.
