The voting members of the Associated Students of Whitworth University (ASWU) voted 20-0 to pass an amendment to the ASWU Bylaws in regards to student media at the Nov. 7 meeting.
Junior Jasmine Linabary, editor-in-chief of The Whitworthian, made a presentation to ASWU on behalf of the Media Committee to create a Media Board.
According to the 2007-08 Student Handbook, editors and managers of student media can only be removed from their positions when “there is a violation of university policies or procedures relating to media operations, or any guidelines established by the individual media at issue.”
When such an issue arises, procedures for removal should be prescribed by the ASWU Media Review Board, according to the Student Handbook.
Linabary said such a board does not currently exist in the Bylaws.
According to the amendment, the Media Board will be made up of the specific media advisers, the director of student activities, the ASWU executive vice president, the current media heads and two staff members of the specific medium.
Each member has to be selected within 10 days after the beginning of each fall semester, according to the amendment.
Linabary said the only changes made to the current processes for student media involve expressly defining those responsible for disciplinary action for the media and adding more people with media knowledge to the hiring process.
Linabary said she did not foresee a need for disciplinary action, but that it would be wise to have these procedures in case a need arises in the future.
Director of communications addresses diversity on Web site
Greg Orwig, director of communications, addressed student concerns from a constituency report that the Whitworth Web site does not present an accurate account of diversity on campus.
Orwig said the percentage of Caucasian students pictured on the “Why Whitworth” section of the site is equal to the percentage of students who identify themselves as Caucasian at enrollment.
Club reports
Senior Jessica Eriksson, president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, said the group meets each Thursday night for a home-cooked meal, worship and a Bible study.
Students do not need to be athletes to attend, Eriksson said.
Junior Mark Baker, president of the Lacrosse Club, said the Lacrosse Club plans to host two clinics to encourage people to play.
The club practices in the Fieldhouse.
