The atmosphere of a concert can determine how the entire concert goes, even before the music starts.
If the lighting is wild and all over you know its not going to be a relaxed concert where everyone is laid back.
The mood of the Point Juncture, WA concert Oct. 10 in the HUB multipurpose room was apparent from the moment you got your hand marked. The only inside lighting came from two lamps set up on stage.
There were some outside lights that shone through the large window behind the stage, but other than those few lights the room was dark. It gave a relaxed, almost sleepy feel to the room, like you had just woken up.
Whitworth junior Dane Ueland opened for Point Juncture, WA. Ueland has been in different bands since high school, and has performed at local coffeeshops around Spokane.
“It was nerve-wracking, being up there by myself,” Ueland said.
Fortunately, Ueland played with Point Juncture when they came to Whitworth last year. Ueland knows the band not only from playing with them, but also because they stayed at his house.
“They needed a place to stay, so they came to my house [and spent the night]. We hung out and talked,” Ueland said.
This concert was different though, because Ueland was playing as a solo act and not with a band, which he had previously done. Ueland played some songs by himself on an electric guitar, but there were several where he had accompaniment from fellow Whitworth students.
Junior Andrea Lavelle sang and played cello and drums on several songs, senior Ryan Brown played violin on two songs, and juniors Anna Collins-Wakeman and Sarah Moyer sang on one song.
Point Juncture, WA started their tour at Whitworth. They will continue touring around the west coast through October.
Their most recent CD, released in November of 2005 is called "Mama Auto Boss." They have also released an EP called "Juxtapony."
They describe their sound as “ethereal dreampop,” and cite Blonde Redhead and Broken Social Scene as some of their interests.
