MEETING REPORT: Constituency Report tops agenda
Morgan Feddes, Copy ChiefThis year’s first student constituency report was a focus of Wednesday’s Associated Students of Whitworth University (ASWU) meeting.
ASWU members conducted the report to gather student opinions to present to the Board of Trustees this week.
According to the report, many students are concerned about Whitworth’s recent growth, as well as the rising costs of tuition and other fees.
Sodexho, building renovation and security also topped the list of concerns on campus.
The senators and representatives said students enjoy life at Whitworth. However, many students are worried the closeness of the campus will start to fade if the university continues to grow.
Senior Scott Donnell, President of ASWU, said the report will enable student committee members to better interact with the members of the Board.
Board meetings will take place through Friday.
ASWU Members Make RAP Suggestions
Associate Dean of Students Dick Mandeville listened to suggestions made by ASWU senators regarding Residence Area Policies (RAP).
Mandeville said he was seeking input on making some of the policies campus-wide instead of dorm specific.
ASWU members said policies regarding alcohol containers and drunkenness on campus should be printed in the student handbook. This would make the regulations clear to all students, even those who miss the RAP meetings.
It was recommended to make the fines regarding candles and open flames consistent across campus. Open flames and candles are prohibited in all campus buildings, but fines vary from dorm to dorm.
Mandeville said enforcement of the policies is the responsibility of all dorm residents, not just the resident assistants.
Club Updates
ASWU members voted to allocate up to $500 to the Real Men of Genius conference this Saturday.
Senior Caleb Knox said the goal of the conference is to provide for the growth of men on campus. Knox said the group needed funds to provide lunch for the students attending the conference, as well as gifts for the speakers.
There will be a women’s conference in February. Members agreed to keep funds reserved for that event as well.
Senior Nissana Nov, president of International Club, said the club hopes to work with international refugees in Spokane throughout the year. The group will also be hosting the International Banquet on Nov. 16.
Junior Andrew Inouye, president of the Hawaiian Club, said the group’s goal is to help students from Hawaii make the transition to Spokane. Kanikapila will be hosted Dec. 1.
Junior Jennifer Johnston, president of the 4 Directions Native Club, said the group hopes to host monthly craft-making events to promote awareness.
