The Pirates lost 3-1 to nationally ranked University of Puget Sound Friday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The Pirates looked to compete early on in the match, taking the first game 30-28. However, the visiting team from Tacoma bounced back with a 30-23 victory in the second game. Whitworth made a stronger effort in the third game but fell short, and UPS took the game 30-26. The fourth game was an uphill battle for Whitworth as they were behind by 12 at one point. The Pirates had one last surge in them and put a few points together with UPS only two points from victory, but their efforts were not enough, losing the deciding game 30-22.
Sophomore Tracy Schwada led the Pirates with 15 kills, while senior Cassie Moore led all players with 34 digs. Junior Holly Ridings chipped in with 39 assists and 15 digs.
The competition does not let up as nationally ranked PLU comes to Spokane tomorrow. Tomorrow’s match-up could be intriguing considering Whitworth will surely be looking to bounce back after the loss this evening, while PLU comes in with their ranking and Northwest Conference lead to defend.
