Golf grabs second in Spokane Cup
Derek Casanovas, Photo/Multimedia EditorIn a tune-up for the upcoming Northwest Conference Fall Classic, Whitworth men and women’s golf teams took second in the Spokane Cup Sept. 21.
Senior Jordan Carter led the way for the Pirates on the men’s side, shooting a one over 73 on the day. Sophomore Alicia Bratlien shot a team best with 83 for the women.
The men’s team shot a total of 298 -- only thirteen strokes behind winner Gonzaga University and seven strokes ahead of Spokane Community College. The women fell to Gonzaga by twenty-four strokes, compiling a total score of 349.
Other scores from the men’s event held at Hangman Valley Golf Course included senior Andrew Parrot at 74, freshman Connor McCracken at 75, and senior Sean Thompson and freshman Ryan Young at 76. Carter highlighted the importance of the event for gauging the performance of the squad’s new players and getting ready for the Fall Classic next month.
“It was a good warmup to the season to see how our freshman could perform and we showed ourselves we can still compete,” Carter said in an e-mail.
Scores for the women’s team included freshmen Kaylin Carlson and Sophie Sestero at 88, Krystal Pitkonen at 90, Rachel Dubes at 92, and Mariesa Stombaugh at 96.
Carter said that the team is excited for the Fall Classic to get underway and feels that Whitworth and Linfield have the best shot at capturing the conference crown this year.
"Linfield should give us the biggest challenge,” Carter said in an e-mail. “We should do great at the Fall Classic.”
Whitworth will open the defense of their third-straight conference title when the Fall Classic kicks off Oct. 21 for the men and Oct. 20 for the women at Spokane Country Club.
