SERVE COORDINATOR:
Danika Heatherly
Year: Junior
Major: Journalism & Mass Communications and Marketing
Minor: Leadership Studies
Who are you?I come from a small town in the middle of California where I like to roll down grassy hills, tip cows, pick oranges, play board games with my family, and spend time with my little sister. I love turtlenecks, Dutch Bros. lattes, traveling, watching the NFL, blueberry muffins, bean burritos, golfing and coloring crayons. That's me!
What do you do and why is it important? The SERVE position provides opportunities to the student body to be involved in changing (or at least impacting) the Spokane community through service. We offer one-day service projects throughout the year at various locations in Spokane and the surrounding area, as well as a longer-term service trip over spring break.
What main issues or ideas do you hope to focus on while you serve on ASWU?My job is unique in that it deals a lot less with programming activities for the students for on-campus entertainment, and much more with assisting them in finding their personal calling for service. SERVE's mission this year is to expand on the third part of Whitworth's mission to "serve humanity."
What is at least one common misconception about your work or ASWU?SERVE isn't all about Community Building Day (although that is a HUGE part of what I do). And a program doesn't need to be offered to you for you to be plugged into service in Spokane. At any time, I'm happy to work with any student to give them the contact and confidence to serve where they feel their talents could be utilized.
What is important for students to know about your work?ASWU provides a unique opportunity to the students of Whitworth to be directly involved in the programs that are offered. My job is to help you help yourself. Come see me please!
