EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT:
Kalen Eshoff
Year: Senior
Major: Psychology
Minors: Theology
Who are you?I grew up in California with my two younger sisters and my parents, who both work at a church. Since coming to Whitworth, I have loved being an RA in Stewart and also singing in the Whitworth Choir for four years. I am majoring in psychology hoping to go into social work at some point in my life.
What do you do and why is it important? My job on ASWU is basically to manage all of the internal aspects of the organization. This means supervising the senators and reps, running elections, meeting one-on-one with everyone else on ASWU once or twice a month, help coordinate major ASWU programming, be a general support when programming occurs and make sure everyone is working well together. Obviously when you have an organization, it is crucial to have positive attitudes, effective communication and teamwork, and part of my job is to facilitate that. Also, I just get to help take care of people and help them be successful, which is awesome.
What main issues or ideas do you hope to focus on while you serve on ASWU? This year, one of my goals is to help facilitate integrated efforts in programming. In other words, I'd like to see more people working together (clubs, RAs, CDAs, Medics, SGCs, Senators, ASWU, theme houses and academic departments) to program fewer but high quality events. This takes a long time to actually get running, but we are slowly working towards teaming up with others around campus!
What is at least one common misconception about your work or ASWU? One misconception about the relationship between the president and the EVP is that the EVP actually does all the grunt work. NOT TRUE. I'd like to commend Obe on all of his great work so far this year. People generally come up with this idea because they don't see the president in action unless he is in an ASWU meeting. But his job is to connect the student body with all other parts of campus. Obe is constantly meeting with people and listening to concerns and conveying them to the right person.
What is important for students to know about your work?It is an awesome thing when we can all come together from our different places on campus and our different perspectives to produce a single effect. ASWU aims to do this in order to serve you, the students. We strive to be internally supported and externally united. Like a rope, we all are our own little strands. We may rub up against each other and fray a little bit, but if we are doing what we are supposed to be doing, we are strongest when we are all moving toward the same goal.
